Superintendent: School starts with ‘few hiccups,’ greater enrollment

  • Thursday, August 28, 2014

File Photo Superintendent Rodney Thompson reported an increased school enrollment for 2014-2015.

Berkeley County schools saw more than 800 new students join the district during the first week of school, according to numbers released by Superintendent Rodney Thompson.

Thompson briefed the school board during its Tuesday meeting. He said that in grades K4-12, enrollment increased by 813 students over last year’s enrollment. He added that there are now 617 students enrolled in Headstart, which serves 3- and 4-year-olds.

Thompson added that, for the most part, the first week of school went smoothly.

“We had a few hiccups; We did have a bus that caught on fire … but for the most part our transportation system did a good job of getting children to school,” Thompson said.

The bus caught on fire on the second day of school, and no one was injured in the fire that occurred near the Willowbrook community in Goose Creek.
