Dan Brown/Independent Hayley Singletary blocks a hit by Cathedral.

The St. Johnís volleyball team played well during its first week of the 2014 season, but came away empty handed, dropping a pair of close losses to Cathedral Academy (3-1) and James Island Christian (3-2).

The Lady Cavs fell to the Lady Generals 25-17, 9-25, 17-25 and 20-25 and battled James Island to five games before falling, 16-25, 19-25, 25-17, 25-21 and 8-15.

First year Coach Lee Davis: ďThe girls played hard in all games even when the opponent was up by a significant amount. These girls have heart and they play together even when itís tough and they donít give up. Thatís the best kind of team I can ask for.Ē

Against Cathedral, SJCA jumped out behind the big serves of Hayley Singletary to take game one 25-17. The Lady Cavs held the lead early in game two but Cathedral rallied to score 15 straight service points and SJCA couldnít hold on.

Against James Island, down 2-0 going into the third game, the Lady Cavs got hot wining games three and four 25-17 and 25-21 before falling in the game five tiebreaker 15-8.

The senior hitter said she thought her team played very well for their first matches of the season.

ďThere are many more things we need to work on for example serve receive,Ē Singletary said. ďBut these are just a few little kinks. After playing like we did the first came I think our future is looking bright for this season.Ē
