South Carolina's Virtual School Program renamed

  • Thursday, August 21, 2014

State Superintendent of Education Mick Zais announced on Aug. 19 that the South Carolina Virtual School Program (SCVSP) will now be known as VirtualSC.

The mission of VirtualSC is to partner with public, private, and home schools to provide free, individualized online learning solutions for students on the path to high school graduation.

VirtualSC will continue to serve students in grades 7-12 and those in Adult Education programs who wish to take courses for high school credit without a seat-time requirement. It offers rigorous online courses for initial credit and credit recovery aligned to state standards developed and taught by highly-qualified, South Carolina certified teachers.

There is no cost to students or to their schools to use VirtualSC. The program does not issue high school diplomas, but works directly in conjunction with a student’s school.

VirtualSC also provides free online test preparation for all South Carolina students planning to take the following national assessments: Explore, ACT, PSAT, SAT, and Advanced Placement™ Exams. It is not necessary to enroll in VirtualSC to take advantage of this test preparation.

VirtualSC offers nearly 100 diverse courses, including Advanced Placement, career and technology, and world languages. The number of students served by VirtualSC in 2009-10 was 7,262 students.

That number has increased exponentially within five years, growing to 22,279 students served in 2013-14.
