Berkeley High’s incoming freshman class got a sneak peak at their new school Friday. During the annual Stag Stampede, freshmen got their schedules and textbooks, and worked on their class unity.

It’s all part of a “smooth transition” for the freshmen, according to Berkeley High assistant principal of freshmen Georgetta Bryant.

“The purpose of the Stampede is to let them understand what being a Stag really means,” she said.

Part of that was tall stacks of textbooks. Another part was learning to navigate the school. But the Stampede also featured teambuilding exercises, like building a free-standing spaghetti tower with just uncooked noodles and a marshmallow. The freshmen were already sectioned off into the teams they will be in for the coming year: University of South Carolina, Clemson, and Wofford University.

“The freshmen are in a team, and what they’re doing is they’re becoming united. They’re taking ownership of their teams,” Bryant said. “The Stampede just brings that unity together.”

The first day of school is Tuesday.
