The summer season turned out to be quick but bountiful for the Moncks Corner Post 126 Junior American Legion baseball team.
The 16-Under legion team won the Region I championship with a 13-4 regular season record and advanced to the second round of the Junior American Legion state tournament sweeping its opening 2-of-3 series with Aynor before being eliminated from the tournament.
“We had a very successful season and a good run through the region and the tournament,” said Coach Wilson Baggett. “We caught a couple of bad breaks there in the end, but we played really well.”
Post 126 was comprised of baseball players from Berkeley and Timberland. Baggett said he received solid hitting and pitching throughout the season and tournament.
“Josh Winningham and Ryan Legette threw some outstanding ball games in the tournament,” Baggett said. “And as a team we hit the ball well overall.”
Winningham also helped his cause at the plate during the state tournament, hitting at an even .500 clip.
Berkeley Stags rising junior Zach Ganey hit .467. Kyle Morrison followed at .455.
D.J. Barberena who will be one of the catchers behind the plate for the Stags in 2015, hit a solid .357
Post 126 Athletics Coordinator Watson Mims was proud of the team’s effort this year.
“We won a region championship this year and that’s a nice accomplishment for these young men.”
Mims thanked Post 126 donors Roger Mitchum, Delta Pharmacy, Buddy’s Barbershop, Lane and Sally Wofford, Manuel Cohen, the Lion’s Club, the Santee Cooper Credit Union and Gene Oliver. He also thanked the parents and coaches for their support.
“Coaches Wilson Baggett and Dean Ganey did an outstanding job with the team this year,” Mims said. “And we couldn’t have enjoyed the success we had this season were it not for the parents and donors.”
The Post 126 Junior American Legion roster includes Robbie Harrelson, Jacob Fiddie, Nathan McPherson, Taylor Bond, Zach Ganey, Austin Wilkins, Jordan Swiney, C.J.
