Veteran journalist Steve McDaniel has joined The Independent’s editorial staff as a news and crime reporter.
McDaniel comes to The Independent from Wilmington, NC, where he worked in a host of capacities for the award-winning Wilmington Star News, a daily newspaper.
His latest duties at the Star News included page design, copy editing and writing.
McDaniel is a graduate of Wofford College.
“We are excited to have a journalist with Steve’s qualifications join our news gathering team,” Summerville Communications Publisher Steve Wagenlander said. “His addition further demonstrates all of our newspapers’ commitment to quality journalism and the communities we are fortunate to serve.”
“Steve was a great find,” editor Frank Johnson said. “He was our first choice to join the news team in Berkeley County.”
McDaniel’s duties will include covering the crime beat in both the Independent and its sister paper, The Gazette in Goose Creek.
McDaniel’s hire means the collective news staff at the three newspapers that make up Summerville Communications – The Independent, The Gazette, and The Summerville Journal Scene – is as large as it has been in over 10 years.
McDaniel, who enjoys following the Braves, Gamecocks and Wofford Terriers, said he is excited to be in the Lowcountry.
“I’m a South Carolina native who is thrilled to have returned to his home state after a quarter-century of living ‘up north’ in Wilmington,” McDaniel said. “When I’m not chasing government and crime stories in Berkeley County, I’m spending time with my wife, Michelle, and our three lovable mutts, Petey, Ruby and Jack.”
