Jobless rate continues to rise in Berkeley County

  • Sunday, July 20, 2014

Berkeley County saw nearly 1,000 more persons seeking work in June, which has contributed to the county’s increasing jobless rate, according to numbers released by S.C. Department of Employment and Workforce.

The jobless rate in June rose to 5.5 percent from 4.9 percent in May. May’s numbers also rose over April’s numbers. There are now 4,863 unemployed in the county. But June’s rate is still significantly lower than June 2013 where the county experienced 7.4 percent unemployment — representing about 6,600 unemployed persons.

About 200 persons gained employment last month in the county.

The new numbers show that while Berkeley County’s jobless rate is rising, the statewide seasonally adjusted rate has held steady at 5.3 percent since April. The national unemployment rate is 6.1 percent in June, which decreased from May’s 6.3 percent rate.
