Stags out, Timberland in for 2014 Sertoma

  • Friday, July 18, 2014

Dan Brown/Independent Timberland will square off against Class AAAA Div. II state runner up Stratford for two quarters in the 44th annual Sertoma Classic. Above, the two schools take part in passing drills at SHS on July 17.

The Berkeley Stags will be conspicuous in their absence at Johnson-Hagood Stadium this year, at the traditional start of the high school football season.

BHS will miss the 44th Annual Sertoma Classic on Aug. 21-22 because of a scheduling conflict.

Berkeley opens its regular season at home against Johnsonville on Friday, Aug. 22, which is when the Stags were originally scheduled to play in the classic.

“Due to a scheduling glitch we had to schedule Johnsonville on the same night as Sertoma,” said Berkeley Coach Jeff Cruce.

In doing so, the Stags have taken a page from Timberland’s book.

In recent years the Wolves opted to open their season in Week O against Manning as opposed to a one-or-two quarter scrimmage at Sertoma.

“In the past we have a better gate and attracted more fans by giving them a live game as opposed to a one quarter scrimmage,” said THS Head Coach Art Craig.

This year, however, because of a similar scheduling glitch involving Manning, Timberland is open for Week 0 and will take on Class AAAA Div. II runner up Stratford for two quarters on Thursday, Aug. 21 on the first night of the Sertoma Classic.

Timberland opens its season on Aug. 29 against Hanahan.

Craig said playing in the Sertoma Classic is all about getting his team game ready.

“We have to get ready for the region and the playoffs any way we can and that means going up against tougher teams like Stratford, Hanahan and Berkeley,” he said.

At Sertoma, Thursday and Friday’s games will feature six match ups.

Goose Creek will take on West Ashley and Summerville plays Hanahan. Cane Bay will line up against Military Magnet.

This year’s event will be the 44th time the Sertoma Club of Charleston will host the Football Classic. The Sertoma Club of Charleston was chartered in 1951.

The 2014 Sertoma lineup will be as follows:

• Thursday, Aug. 21

Academic Magnet vs. Lincoln

Military Magnet vs. Cane Bay

Hanahan vs. Summerville

Stratford vs. Timberland (2 quarters)

James Island vs. Palmetto Christian

Goose Creek vs. West Ashley (2 quarters)

• Friday, Aug. 22

St. John’s vs. Baptist Hill

North Charleston vs. Garrett

Burke vs. First Baptist

Pinewood vs. Woodland

Northwood vs. Stall

Wando vs. Bishop England (2 quarters)
