Moncks Corner town attorney John West presented town council with the framework for a special election for the office of mayor of Moncks Corner slated for March 2015 during the Tuesday, July 15 town council meeting.

“With Mayor Bill Peagler winning the election for county supervisor in June and on the assumption he wins the general election in November and resigns from office effective December 31, 2014, the countdown to a special election will begin on January 1, 2015.”

West told members of council the information was provided to him by Adam Hammons, Director of Berkeley County Elections and Registration.

Peagler defeated Berkeley County Supervisor Dan Davis in the June 24 Republican primary runoff to become the Berkeley County Supervisor-elect. Now Moncks Corner will have to find a new mayor.

Once Peagler tenders his resignation Mayor Pro Tem Michael Lockliear will move to the center seat and assume the role of Interim Mayor until the special election scheduled for Tuesday, March 31, 2015.

Filing for the special election opens at noon on Friday Jan. 15, 2015 and will remain open for 10 days and close at noon on Monday, Jan. 26, 2015.

The new mayor could be sworn in immediately after the election results are certified, or at the next regularly scheduled town meeting.

Should a current town council member run for and win the mayor’s race then the following dates would apply for a special election to fill the unexpired term of the town council seat.

Filing would begin at noon on Friday, April 17, 2015 and remain open until noon on Monday, April 27, 2015. The special election would be held on Tuesday, June 30, 2014.
