UPDATED: School district passes $223.5M budget without millage increase

  • Monday, July 7, 2014

Berkeley County School Board unanimously passed a $223.5 million budget for the 2014-2015 fiscal year, which began June 30.

The budget was passed during the boardís June 24 regular meeting.

Despite the budget not dipping into the fund balance, like last yearís budget, and an increase to the budget by more than $8 million, there is no increase in millage, the rate at which properties are taxed in the county.

And with a $4.2 million in teacher salary and benefits, balancing didnít come easy this year, according to Chief Financial Officer Brantley Thomas.

But helping the district balance the books included a number of factors: the countyís reassessment on home values, student growth, and retiring teachers, Brantley said.

Beyond scheduled tenure pay increases for teachers, no cost-of-living increase will be offered to district employees.

CORRECTION: The original article stated that the $4.2 million increase to this yearís budget was due to S.C. First Steps. That was an inaccurate statement as it is due to step increases in teacher salaries and benefits.
