There are only seven months left before the Berkeley County Seniors Moncks Corner facility expansion opens in February 2015.

The facility broke ground on the half-million dollar expansion in early June.

“We are totally thrilled this is happening. It will definitely be a great asset to the seniors living in the area,” Seniors Executive Director Tonya Adams said.

The center currently serves about 50 seniors a day. The expansion should double its capacity, according to Adams.

The expansion will add an additional 2,500 square feet, doubling the size of the existing activity room, adding office space for staff, providing a designated bus drop-off/pick-off area, and increasing parking.

The cost for the expansion is projected to be $584,800. Berkeley County budgeted the expansion, according to Adams.

Berkeley Seniors serves 9,000 meals a month to member seniors and relies on grants, donations and fundraisers for funding.

The expansion has been nine years in the making.

“The senior population and the need grows daily,” Adams said. “We are dealing with overcrowding and the inability to offer a range of services ... we have waiting lists of 150 upward on certain services.

“This (expansion) is really going to impact the seniors in the Moncks Corner region of Berkeley County.”

The senior center provides social activities, fitness, trips for essential needs like groceries and medicine, and meals for home-bound seniors. For more information, visit www.berkeleyseniors.org.
