Free mortgage clinic open to Berkeley residents

  • Monday, June 23, 2014

In an effort to assist struggling homeowners, the Dorchester Prosperity Center will hold a free mortgage default clinic on Wednesday, June 25.

The clinic is set for 3-7 p.m. by appointment only. Contact the center at 843-282-6294 or 843-761-6033 to make an appointment or for more information.

The center is located at 222 Trolley Road in Summerville.

The Prosperity Center is a collaborative effort of Trident United Way, Palmetto Goodwill, and Family Services, Inc. The clinic will be led by representatives of FSI, a 125-year-old and nationally-awarded, HUD-approved nonprofit organization based in North Charleston.

The clinic lets distressed homeowners meet one-on-one with a mortgage default advisor. The clinic is free and open to all homeowners regardless of lender or county of residence.

Someone should attend the clinic if they are having trouble paying their mortgage, facing foreclosure, or current on their mortgage but fear they may get behind or be unable to make their payments in the future.

Homeowners may qualify for mortgage modifications, bringing past mortgage payments current, lowered interest rates and lowered monthly mortgage payments.

To receive the most effective counseling, participants should bring a mortgage statement, any correspondence from lender or attorney, two pay stubs for everyone in the household, proof of any other form of income, two most current bank statements, their most recent tax return with W-2ís, and recent utility bills.
