The annual 2014 Berkeley Stags Baseball Skills Camp was once again a rousing success, according to Stags baseball coach Landy Cox.
The camp has become an annual tradition for the Stags players and coaches.
“I’ve been back here at Berkeley now for five years and every year the camp seems to get bigger and better,” Cox said of the 68 campers participating in this year’s skills camp. “We had a perfect number of players this year with 68 players attending. That’s a good number of kids for our coaches to work with and I think we’ve gotten a lot of positive things accomplished here this week.”
To watch the camp, it’s easy to see how “The Berkeley Way” has filtered down from the varsity level to the younger park and recreation age kids.
All were outfitted in the royal blue practice jerseys of the Berkeley Stags with “Find A Way” printed in gold on the backs of ballplayers throughout the camp.
“We teach these kids the Berkeley Way of playing baseball,” Cox said. “You can see it in them early. They want to learn and they want to play this game our way.”
And like his Stags varsity team, these kids can hit, catch and throw.
Cox praised the enthusiasm and support the community of Moncks Corner has shown his team.
“Look at how this community and this school supports its baseball team,” he said. “These parents want their kids to learn our way of playing baseball and be coached by our current and former varsity baseball players.”
Camp coaches were current Stags Brad Browder, Jordan Swiney, Joe Glauser, Zach Ganey and Chase Ganey, plus 2014 graduate Kyle Garrick, and alumni Brad Barwick and Owen Brittle.
Brittle coincidentally has joined the Stags coaching staff and will work with pitcher in 2015.
“I’m really excited to be back home at Berkeley,” Brittle said, who spent the last two seasons serving as a Hanahan assistant. “I’m really looking forward to working with next year’s baseball team.”
