Summertime in Moncks Corner means two things for school-aged children, vacation and summer camps.
For about 30 elementary and middle school girls it means the annual Lady Stags’ Softball Camp, which ran from June 3-6 at the Moncks Corner Youth Fields Complex.
“This camp helps us to get the word out to the younger girls as to how we do things with the Berkeley softball team,” said Lady Stags Coach Boogie Grooms. “If you start teaching them how do things right at an early age, that’s less you have to work to correct later on when they get older.”
Grooms along with 2014 Class AAA All-State first team selections Blake Ponder and Brooklyn Stone ran the girls through an assortment of fielding, throwing, hitting and baserunning drills over the course of the three-day camp.
“The weather was perfect,” Grooms said. “No rain to contend with this week and it wasn’t too hot.
“We were able to get a lot of good work in.”
The 2014 Lady Stags won their second consecutive Region 8AAA championship before bowing out in the Class AAA Lower State semifinals.
“We are getting better every year, but next year we want to work from day one to get playoff ready,” Grooms said. “It’s no longer just about winning a region championship. We want to be prepared to make a deep run into the playoffs.”
