Murray: Coaching policy not on school board agenda

  • Saturday, June 7, 2014

Dan Brown/Independent Berkeley Stags athletic director Jeff Cruce congratulates Lady Stags softball coach Boogie Grooms for winning a second consecutive Region 8AAA title. Grooms stands to lose three of his assistant coaches should Murray's proposed policy change passes.

According to Berkeley County School Board Chairman Kent Murray, the school district’s volunteer coaching policy is not on the agenda for the school board’s June 10 meeting.

“The issue is not scheduled for Tuesday night,” Murray said via text message on Friday.

At the last school board meeting, Murray floated the notion that the district planned to review its volunteer coach policy to ban parents of student athletes.

“When I was growing up your science teacher was your assistant coach, not your parent,” Murray said following the board’s May 27 meeting.

The idea to ban parents as volunteer coaches was met with opposition.

Some county coaches, including Berkeley High School’s Jeff Cruce, spoke out against the proposal. An online petition was circulated against such a ban, and included more than 200 signatures.

The school board meets Tuesday at the district office in Moncks Corner.
