Tragedy struck in Moncks Corner Friday afternoon, as a 21-year-old St. Stephen man drowned after jumping into the Tailrace Canal from the Hwy. 52 bridge in Moncks Corner.
According to Berkeley County Coroner and Rescue Squad Chief Bill Salisbury, 21-year-old Mathew Gourdine of St. Stephen jumped into the water at 3:18 p.m. and did not surface. Berkeley County Rescue Squad, SC DNR, Berkeley County Sheriff’s Office, and several local fire departments responded and started a search.
According to Salisbury, at 4:20 p.m. the Rescue Squad recovered the body of Mr. Gourdine.
His death has been ruled as an accidental drowning, Salisbury reported. The death was investigated by the Berkeley County Coroner’s Office and the South Carolina Dept. of Natural Resources.
