BHS teacher places second in DAR contest

Berkeley High School American History teacher Douglas Burges placed second in the South Carolina statewide Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) American History Teacher of the Year 2014 contest.

He was rewarded by the local DAR chapter, General Marionís Brigade for his outstanding teaching accomplishments.

Several of his former students wrote letters of recommendation for his nomination. They recalled how Burges uses his enthusiastic teaching style to achieve an in depth learning of American history. He encourages his students to examine all facts surrounding what they are studying.

His students are well prepared for the AP examination. He teaches excellent research skills to prepare his students for life and for college. Many of his students pursue degrees in history and law.

Because of Doug Burges, students created the BHS Liberty Club! This club cultivates good citizenship ideals.

His students understand the importance of an enlightened citizenry.

On May 19, Cathi Lee, Regent of General Marionís Brigade, presented Burges with a certificate, General Francis Marion pin and monetary award on behalf of her chapter.
