One of the Lowcountry’s best-ever high school football players has another honor to his credit.

Joe Hamilton, a 1995 Macedonia High School graduate, has been selected to the College Football Hall of Fame and will be inducted in December in New York.

Hamilton played quarterback for Georgia Tech from 1996-99 and is the school record-holder for total offense with 10,640 yards. He helped the Yellow Jackets earn a piece of the Atlantic Coast Conference title in 1998 and was the Heisman Trophy runner-up in 1999 behind Wisconsin’s Ron Dayne. The same year, he won the Davey O’Brien Award as the nation’s top quarterback.

Hamilton is the first quarterback in Tech history with a spot in the College Hall and 13th overall.

Hamilton is part of a class of 14 players that includes ex-South Carolina receiver Sterling Sharpe, Mississippi’s Wesley Walls and Alabama’s Derrick Thomas. He was one of 75 players on the ballot.

He is currently a recruiting assistant at Georgia Tech.

After college, Hamilton played in three different professional leagues.

Hamilton was selected in the 2000 NFL Draft by Tampa Bay and spent three seasons with the Buccaneers. He also played in NFL?Europe with Franfurt and in the Arena Football League with Orlando.
