While Moncks Corner Town Council did not have enough members present to field a quorum at its regular meeting last week, council was able to take care of what Mayor Bill Peagler called, “the people we need to honor the most.”

The mayor said “certain situations,” prevented council members Michael Lockliear, Johna Bilton, Tonya Aiken-Taylor and Laura Perdue from attending the meeting. Town officials said it was a combination of other engagements and illness the prohibited the four council members from attending.

The lack of a quorum prohibited council from acting on any of the proposed items on this month’s agenda.

“It makes me very proud to be the mayor when we celebrate the town’s youth,” Peagler said. “We had two very successful spring sports teams in Berkeley’s baseball and softball teams and it’s always a pleasure to honor the youth of Moncks Corner.”

The Berkeley Lady Stags won a second consecutive Region 8AAA championship while posting a 20-7 record for the 2014 season. The Lady Stags were defeated in the District VIII semi-finals, losing to Socastee 3-2.

“Last year we won a region championship and this year we won back-to-back region championships,” said Coach Boogie Grooms. “That is a first for girls’ softball at Berkeley High School.”

Grooms also announced that Blake Ponder and Brooklyn Stone were named to the Class AAA All-State Team.

Team members are Sidney Kizer, Lexi Samples, Kelston Hilton, Payton Pinson, Peyton Svagerko, Tori Singletary, Olivia Grooms, Blake Ponder, Brooklyn Stone, Brook Stueness, Cameron Ling, Jessica Stanley, Kinsey Hutto and Olivia Hill.

The Berkeley Stags baseball team were 2014 Lower State Runners-up, losing to Hartsville in the 2-0 in the Lower State finals. “We beat Hartsville in Game One and forced a second game, but the bounce didn’t go our way,” said Coach Landy Cox.

This 2014 senior class of Stags baseball won the 2012 District VII Championship, 2013 Region 8AAA Region Championship, and the 2014 Region 8AAA and District VIII Championships.

“Since 2012 these Stags have compiled a 31-2 record playing at Jim Bradley Field,” Cox said. “I attribute that to the fans of Moncks Corner that have come out to watch these kids play and cheer our team on.”

Team members are Brad Browder, Brandon Williams, Bryce Kunkle, Chase Ganey, Connor Teague, Craig Mims, Dillon Salisbury, Drew Anderson, Dylan Baker, Eric Orton

Jeffrey Stone, Joe Glauser, Josh Fiddie, Joshua Simmons

Kyle Garrick, Kyle Morrison, Ryan Legette, Sterling Fiddie, Zach Ganey and Zach Gonzales.

Since council could not field a quorum there was no additional business to cover. This month’s council agenda items will be carried over to the June town council agenda.
