S.C. Hurricanes finish second in Lexington tournament

The South Carolina Hurricanes got their summer travel softball season off on the right foot by finishing second in the 2014 Combat for Measles Tournament in Lexington on May 17-18.

The Canes moved up in classification this season from 16-Under to the 18-Under bracket in order to see better competition.

The Hurricanes are comprised of Berkeley County high school softball players and will play in weekend tournaments throughout the summer.

The Canes rolled through the tournament competition, playing seven games with a one-hour time limit and scored 35 runs on 56 hits, while surrendering 20 runs on 44 hits.

Six hitters posted averages of .400 or better for the tournament.

The Lady Stags’ Jessica Stanley led all hitters with a .643 average, followed by Kendall Grubb at .571, Alyssa Antienza hitting an even .500, Caitlin Mills notched a .467 mark for the tournament, Class AA All-State selection Haley Welch from Timberland hit .412, and Berkeley’s Class AAA All-State pitcher Brooklyn Stone hit .400.

The Lady Stags’ Tori Singletary belted a pair of homers in the weekend competition.

The Hurricanes lost in the championship game due to international tiebreaker rules.

Team members are Brooklyn Stone, Haley Welch, Jessica Stanley, Tori Singletary, Baily Crolley, Skylar Chambers, Alyssa Atienza, Caitlin Mills, Alex Cave, Kendall Grubb and Peggy Rochay.
