The search to replace retiring St. John’s Christian Academy Athletic Director Bob Winters didn’t take long.
The Cavaliers found their man in former Berkeley basketball assistant and Stall basketball coach Steve Guerry, the school announced recently.
Guerry will take over athletic director duties beginning in June and plans to hit the ground running.
“I want to raise the awareness and interest of St. John’s Christian Academy sports,” Guerry said. “I want to get the word out around Moncks Corner that there are some good athletes and good sports being played here on Main Street.”
What delayed a formal announcement was naming Guerry to serve as the Cavaliers’ boys basketball coach.
Guerry inherits a team hit hard with graduation but Guerry feels confident he can field a competitive team with the players returning.
“We have a quality core group of players returning and we plan to field a competitive team next winter,” he said. “We’re looking for good kids that are good athletes.
“Good kids are coachable, which will give us a competitive team this winter. Hopefully having good kids here will attract others to want to become part of the Cavaliers’ family as well.”
Guerry’s first task at hand is to get to know the players, students, and faculty at SJCA, then speak with the Cavalier coaches to become familiar with the athletic department at the school.
Afterwhich, Guerry plans to hit the street.
“I want to get out in the community and talk St. John’s Cavaliers sports with anybody willing to listen,” he said.
Headmaster Eric Denton called Guerry an easy choice to make.
“Steve represents the kind of coach and athletic director we are looking for to lead our young people here at St.John’s Christian Academy,” he said. “We’re very excited to have Steve head up our sports program and our basketball team. He brings the kind of character and work ethic that we teach. We look forward to great things from Steve in the years to come.”
