All in the family: John McCall hired to lead Cavs football

Dan Brown/Independent Dustin Parsons heads up a young Cavaliers team returning for new coach John McCall.

St. John’s Christian Academy has a new football coach.

John McCall, younger brother of former SCJA coach Bill McCall, has been hired to lead the Cavaliers football program, the school announced this week.

McCall, a 2006 graduate of SJCA, played and coached under his older brother and returns to his alma mater after living in Virginia.

“I didn’t know how much I missed football and how much I missed St. John’s,” McCall said. “When I moved to Virginia I never knew if I’d coach again or not. But when I got back into town I was around the game again and feeling the atmosphere here, and I realized I wanted to get back into coaching football again.”

McCall takes over a football program two years removed from playing for the SCISA 8-Man Football Championship in 2012, and a team that had to rebuild almost from the ground up in 2013, finishing the season with a 3-7 record under first-year coach Matt Gilbert.

Headmaster Eric Denton had nothing but praise for his new football coach.

“We’re very excited to have someone like John McCall,” Denton said. “He is one of our own, a graduate of St. John’s, and a former player and coach here as well. He knows a lot about the game of football and can relate well with the kids. We expect big things from John as we move forward.”
