Stags fall to Hartsville 11-2

The Berkeley Stags hadn't played in an ugly game all season.

They were due for one.

And against Hartsville in the Lower State semifinals they got it.

A six-run fourth inning blew the doors off the barn as the Red Foxes downed Berkeley 11-2 and now sit in the catbird seat in the Lower State Championship tournament.

The Stags, who committed an uncharacteristic three errors, fell behind 5-0 in the first two innings. None of those five runs were earned.

After Berkeley rallied to cut the score to 5-2 in the third, Hartsville put the game away by sending 11 hitters to the plate in the fourth inning. The Red Foxes were helped along by a pair of walks and a hit batsman in the six-run uprising.

The Stags suffered their first defeat since losing to the Red Foxes 5-2 in the HIT tournament a month ago and surrendered the most runs in a game so far this season.

Zach Gonzales and Kyle Morrison rapped out two hits each to lead Berkeley.

With the loss, the Stags fall to 23-4 and now must battle back through the loser's bracket. They face Gilbert at home on Friday. Gilbert defeated Socastee 9-2 on Wednesday.

Should Berkeley win Friday, it must beat Hartsville twice on the road on Monday to advance to the state championship series.
