Dan Brown/Independent Berkeley Stags 2014 District VIII Champs

Chase Ganey’s bases loaded single in the bottom of the seventh scored Dillon Salisbury with the winning run as the Berkeley Stags captured the District VIII championship with a 5-4 win over Marlboro County.

“We didn’t hit that well tonight but we ran the bases well,” said Coach Landy Cox, who has two district championships to go with his two Region 8-AAA titles. “I think the key to our winning the game was the way we ran the bases.”

Berkeley managed just six hits on the night but manufactured every run it scored on bunts, stealing bases and taking the extra base when it was offered.

After Marlboro County tied the score at 4-4 with three runs in the top of the seventh, the Stags performed their usual magic in their last at-bat.

Salisbury stroked a single to right and stole second. Kyle Garrick was hit by a pitch and Josh Simmons walked to load the bases.

Ganey came to the plate with one out and the bases loaded. Ganey was 0-3 on the night against Bulldogs lefthander Dylan Ellis and was facing hard throwing righty Conner Pate, who has signed with Coastal Carolina.

Ganey proved himself worthy of his “New Money” nickname by bouncing a high-hopping single through the drawn-in infield.

The Stags improved to 23-3 but will have little time to celebrate the district crown as they face second-ranked Socastee on Monday, May 12 in the Lower State final four tournament.

“This team refuses to lose,” Cox said. “We live by our motto - ‘Find a way.’”
