The 43rd Annual Hell Hole Swamp Festival conducted its opening ceremonies on April 27 at the Steel Shed.

President Tony Madray was the Master of Ceremonies. Mayor Roy Pipkin welcomed everyone and spoke about activities happening in the town.

Tony Madray introduced Carol Guerry, who announced the HHSF Governor for 2014, Mrs. Chris Pipkin, who has worked with the festival for numerous years in many capacities and has helped bring many improvements to the festival, as well as the town.

Next, the Rev. David Phillips provided the invocation and introduced the gospel quartet, The Common Call. Everyone joined in and enjoyed a wonderful performance by The Common Call.

Afterward, Tony Madray announced that the HHSF Book has been dedicated to Mrs. Mabel Shuler. Mrs. Shuler was the first female magistrate in Berkeley County, following her husband, Lawton Shuler, as magistrate. She has been a strong community member, volunteer for the HHSF, as well as employing many local people through her farm. The Rev. Gene Lisenby provided the benediction and blessing of the food.

The ceremony was followed by a covered dish dinner. About 75 people attended.
