Lady Stags magic fizzles in 1-0 shutout loss to Socastee

Dan Brown/Independent Payton Pinson lined a base hit to right to start a rally.

The saying goes, “It was one of those games.”

The Lady Stags hit the ball, but the shots wouldn’t drop in a 1-0 first round playoff loss to Socastee on Friday night, May 2, in Moncks Corner.

Hits came at a premium as the Lady Stags tallied five singles.

Brooklyn Stone scattered just four hits and allowed one run over seven innings, but the Lady Stags could not find the big hit they needed to rally.

Stone helped herself at the plate with a solid single. Blake Ponder, Jessica Stanley Payton Pinson and Brooklyn Stueness all had hits for the Lady Stags.

Berkeley had runners on base in every inning and threatened with the potential tying run in the fifth and seventh innings, but the hits just wouldn’t fall.

“We’re backed into a corner but we’ll come out fighting on Monday,” said Coach Boogie Grooms.

The loss drops Berkeley into the District VIII loser’s bracket with must-win games on Monday and Wednesday in order to return to play for the District VIII title on Friday. The Lady Stags must now win four straight games if they hope to take home the crown.
