Blue skies. Sunshine. Warm weather. And some great food.
All ingredients for a picture perfect day at the Berkeley Country Club on Thursday April 24 and the Third Annual Berkeley High School Athletics Hall of Fame golf tournament.
“It was a great day and a great time for everyone to get together for a good cause,” said Hall of Fame Committee Chairman Lane Wofford.
Twenty-one teams competed in the shotgun start tournament vying for top prizes that included low gross score, low net score, longest drive and closest to the pin.
New this year is the honoring of one of Berkeley’s many outstanding teams, the 1960 football squad.
“There are teams that deserve to be honored,” Wofford said, “Teams that were dominant during their time like the 1960 Stags ... that are deserving of their place in history.”
The honoring of specific teams is a new wrinkle to the hall of fame, which enters its third year.
The Class of 2014 includes Kathy Brittle Jones, Jimmy Villeoponteaux, David Barnett, Don Brown Jr., Mal Lawyer, Clark Simpkins, Pete Myers, and the 1960 football team.
The 2014 Class of the Hall of Fame will be inducted during the annual Hall of Fame Banquet on Thursday, Sept. 11 and introduced during halftime of the Friday, Sept. 12 football game against Cane Bay.
“We had a lot of calls from people who didn’t know about the hall of fame induction and would have liked to attend so we moved the induction back a couple weeks from previous years to give out of town alumni time to make plans,” Wofford said.
The Hall of Fame Nominating Committee is comprised of Berkeley Stags fans, BHS alumni and local commmunity business and civic leaders.
Committee members are Dave Copeland, current Hall of Famers Ben Fleming Sr. and Butch Watson, Amy Jones, Craig Mims and Bill McCall Sr.
In May the Berkeley Athletics Hall of Fame will award its first BHAHOF student athlete scholarship, a senior boy and girl student athlete.
“We hope this scholarship award will be the beginning of a longstanding tradition at Berkeley High School in honoring the outstanding student athletes that wear the Stags blue and gold, and to give them some assistance as they continue their education on the collegiate level,” Wofford said.
