It’s deja vu all over again, again.
A couple of Berkeley Stags history making sports moments.
Never before has either the Berkeley Stags baseball and the Lady Stags softball teams repeated as region champs.
Until this year.
And never before have two Berkeley teams captured their respective region titles on the same night in back-to-back years.
The Lady Stags no-hit Hilton Head 15-0 behind the arm of Brooklyin Stone and the Stags nearly duplicated that feat as Zach Gonzales fired a two-hitter to pace the Stags to a 10-0 region clinching win on the other side of Lake Berkeley.
“We could see big things out of these teams this spring,” said Lady Stags Coach Boogie Grooms. “These girls are hungry.”
Region 8AAA Coach of the Year Landy Cox smiled for the first time in three months following the ceremonial ice bath after his Stags pitched their third straight shutout.
“These guys refuse to lose, and they won’t lose at home.”
Both teams will face the number four seeds out of Region 7 to include Myrtle Beach, North Myrtle Beach, Georgetown, Socastee, St. James and Wilson.
The first round of the the state tournament begins Friday, May 2 and again on Monday, May 5 at Jim Bradley Field.
