In celebration of Earth Day 2014, Berkeley Middle School hosted its inaugural Earth Day Expo.

The seventh grade Social Studies department hosted volunteers from four organizations in Berkeley County visit the school to educate students on their efforts to help protect the environment.

Representatives from Santee Cooper let students know ways they could reduce the amount of energy they consumed.

Seventh grader Karmen Meree said the students learned a lot from the presentation. “Now before I leave I unplug everything in my room” to reduce energy consumption,” Karmen said.

The South Carolina Department of Natural Resources let students know about the delicate ecosystems in South Carolina. Afterward, seventh grader Taylor Girts said, “I never knew bats could be so important.”

Berkeley County Waste and Sanitation Agency informed students and staff about a Single Stream Recycling bin on the school campus that can be used to recycle most office waste. Students were also excited to learn from educational outreach volunteers from Cypress Gardens about the many species of animals native to South Carolina, and their importance.

Even the most timid of students ventured a touch of the snakes, alligators, and turtles that the presenters brought. This year’s Expo was a great success and Berkeley Middle School is looking forward to an even bigger event next year.
