21 Berkeley County schools take Gold and Silver in Palmetto Awards

The S.C. Education Oversight Committee has recognized 21 Berkeley County schools for general performance and closing the achievement gap for the Palmetto Gold and Silver Awards.

S.C. schools can earn either a gold or silver designation in either category. Only 65 schools in the state received gold for both categories and Hanahan High is the only Berkeley County school to receive that elite designation.

Here are the schools that earned gold for general performance:

• Cane Bay High

• Cross High

• Daniel Island School (Elementary)

• Daniel Island School (Middle)

• Goose Creek High

• Hanahan Elementary

• Hanahan High

• Hanahan Middle

• Howe Hall AIMS

• Marrington Elementary

• Marrington Middle School for the Arts

• Sangaree Intermediate

• Stratford High

• Westview Middle

Here are the schools that earned silver for general performance:

• Cainhoy Elementary/Middle

• Cane Bay Middle

• Cross Elementary

• J.K. Gourdin Elementary

• Macedonia Middle

• St. Stephen Elementary

• Timberland High

The only Berkeley County school to receive gold for closing the achievement gap was Hanahan High.

Here are the schools that earned silver for closing the achievement gap:

• Cane Bay Middle

• Cross Elementary

• Daniel Island School (Middle)

• Howe Hall AIMS

• Marrington Elementary

• Marrington Middle School for the Arts

To identify schools to receive Palmetto Gold or Silver Award for General Performance, the school report card absolute and growth ratings and indices are utilized.

To identify elementary and middle schools to receive Awards for Closing Achievement Gap, PASS end-of-year performances and growth in performance on PASS by students belonging to historically underachieving groups are used. To identify high schools to receive the gap-closing awards, on-time high school graduation rates of students belonging to historically underachieving groups are used.
