Wanted: Suggestions to revitalize St. Stephen

Dear Editor:

Small Town Restoration Inc. is currently requesting suggestions, recommendations, comments and feedback on ways to beautify, revitalize and re-populate the Town of St. Stephen.

We would like to improve our town and put it back on the map, so we are requesting suggestions from area residents. We need something that no one else in the area has that would draw people to St. Stephen. Our old, vacant, run-down buildings just arenít doing much to promote new businesses and bring new residents to the area.

We currently have the Catfish Festival in the spring, October Fest in the fall, and the Christmas Parade and Tree Lighting in the winter, but we need something that will be around all year long to bring people to the area to live, and not just visit.

We need industry for jobs, stores on our Main Street, and businesses, and recreation facilities such as a Senior Citizens Center, a Youth Center, and a Day Care Center. We need restaurants, a hardware store, an auto repair shop Ö in short, we need new people to settle down in the St. Stephen area.

We have a gracious plenty of churches, convenience stores, gas stations and hair salons, but these are not bringing in newcomers.

We have a four-lane highway running through St. Stephen, a railroad in the heart of town, and the Re-Diversion Canal just out of town. We also have plenty of vacant land and vacant buildings in and around the St. Stephen area, so we should be able use the assets we have to rebuild.

We would also appreciate any suggestions or recommendations for fundraisers to help finance these improvements. Please forward your suggestions, recommendations, comments or feedback to: Small Town Restoration Inc., PO Box 249, St. Stephen, SC 29479.

Thank you.

Barbara J. Mixon
