Jeff Cole, an instructor at the Japan Karate Institute in Moncks Corner earned his black belt in the sport.
Cole was presented his black belt in karate during a ceremony on March 22.
“Sempai Jeff endured a test designed for someone half his age,” said Sensei Jamie Whetsell. “He showed a perseverance that few have shown in earning his black belt.”
The Japanese word “sempai” means senior or mentor.
Cole started training with Japan Karate Institute in the summer of 2010 after seeing the benefits his children were receiving from karate training and instruction.
“The Japan Karate Institute is like an extended family,” said Cole.
The Japan Karate Institute is Charleston’s largest martial arts organization. Japan Karate Institute of Moncks Corner has been a locally owned business for over 10 years.
