OW! Lady Stags pound Orangeburg-Wilkinson 15-0

Dan Brown/Independent Sidney Kizer makes a running catch on a line drive in the first inning of the Lady Stags' 15-0 win over Orangeburg-Wilkinson.

It may have only lasted three innings but a no-hitter is a no-hitter.

And a perfect game no less.

For Berkeley softball pitcher Jessica Stanley this was her second no-hitter of the year, a 15-0 blanking of Orangeburg-Wilkinson last week.

She set them up and put them down, retiring all nine hitters she faced while striking out two. The Lady Bruins did not hit a ball out of the infield in Stanley’s perfect effort.

The Lady Stags’ offense supported Stanley with a seven-run first inning, keyed by a Tori Singletary RBI single. The centerfielder’s biggest hit came in a five-run third inning, when she crushed a two-RBI triple into the gap to put the Lady Bruins down for the count.

Since the Lady Stags’ 3-0 loss at Stratford on March 21, Berkeley has outscored their opponents 54-2 in winning five straight.

Stanley improved to 6-0 with the win and helped her own cause at the plate with a single and two runs scored.

Singletary had two hits on the day with four RBIs, and Brook Stueness had two hits with a run scored and an RBI to help lead the Lady Stags.

Other Lady Stags to tally hits in the 10-hit attack were Kinsey Hutto, who also scored two runs; Olivia Hill, who scored three times; Madeline Wiggins, who added an RBI and tallied three runs; Sydney Kizer, who scored twice; and Cameron Ling, who drove in three big runs with her basehit.

With the win, Berkeley improved to 10-1 on the season and 4-0 in Region 8-AAA play.

“We have put ourselves in good position in the region with the way we’ve played in the first round,” said Coach Boogie Grooms. “If we come out of Hilton Head with a win I feel really good about our chances going into the second half of the region schedule.”
