Stags break out big sticks in 15-3 Hanahan drubbing

  • Saturday, March 29, 2014

Dan Brown/Independent Connor Teague belted one of four home runs, two by Kyle Garrick and another by Joshua Simmons in the Stags 15-3 thumping of Hanahan.

The Berkeley Stags broke out their big sticks and sent a message to the rest of Region 8-AAA in the process: “We will not give up this crown without a war first.”

Kyle Garrick clubbed a pair of home runs as part of a four-hit night to lead a 15-hit attack as the Stags dispatched Hanahan with relative ease, 15-3, on the road to even their region record at 1-1.

Connor Teague and Josh Simmons added homers as Berkeley took ultimate advantage of the friendly confines of the Hawks’ tiny ballpark, posting big innings with a four-run first, a five-run fourth, and a four-run seventh inning to cruise to the win.

Coach Landy Cox said the game with Hanahan was the first time he’s had everyone healthy this season.

“They played angry and with an attitude,” he said. “This was as focused as I have seen this group this year.”

Zach Gonzales picked up the win, allowing three runs on five hits over five innings of work. The lefty walked one and struck out nine.

Dillon Salisbury rapped out three hits and Gonzales included a double and triple plus four RBIs to help lead the Berkeley offense.

The Stags improve to 7-2 with the win, rebounding from a 2-0 loss to James Island on March 26 and return home for contests this week against Stall and Orangeburg-Wilkinson before hitting the road for a big Region 8-AAA showdown at Hilton Head on Friday.
