Stags fall to JI 2-0 in pitcher’s duel

  • Friday, March 28, 2014

Dan Brown/Independent Stags southpaw Joe Glauser has emerged as the moundstaff leader in the season's early going.

The Berkeley Stags left their bats at home, mustering just one base hit - a single by Zach Gainey - in a 2-0 loss to James Island on Wednesday, March 26.

The shutout stymied a brilliant pitching performance by junior southpaw Joe Glauser, who has emerged in the season’s early going as the go-to guy for a Berkeley moundstaff hampered by arm trouble.

The Stags still had their opportunities to score, receiving five free passes courtesy of the Trojans’ Daniel Wilcutt, who walked five and fanned seven in throwing the shutout.

Glauser walked just two hitters in his complete game effort.

Gainey also came through in the clutch against Colleton County on Monday, March 24 in Walterboro.

Dylan Baker led off the top of the seventh with a base hit to left and moved to second on Josh Simmons’ second hit of the night. That set up Gainey’s eventual game-winning hit.

Zach Gonzales picked up his first win of the season, firing two innings of shutout relief.

The Stags stand at 6-2 on the season and 0-1 in Region 8-AAA action.

They are slated to travel to Hanahan on Friday.
