Grateful to be remembered.
The 2014 class of the Berkeley Athletics Hall of Fame was announced this month, the third such class honoring the long line of outstanding athletes comprising the school’s storied history.
New this year is a the honoroing of one of Berkeley’s many outstanding teams, the 1960 football squad.
“There are teams that deserve to be honored,” said BAHOF Committee Chairman Lane Woffard. “Teams that were dominant during their time like the 1960 Stags ... that are deserving of their place in history.”
The honoring of specific teams is a new wrinkle to the hall of fame, which enters its third year.
The Class of 2014 includes Kathy Brittle Jones, Jimmy Villeoponteaux, David Barnett, Don Brown Jr., Mal Lawyer, Clark Simpkins, Pete Myers, and the 1960 football team.
Wofford, the only holdover from the original Berkeley Hall of Fame committee, assumed the chairmanship of the committee from BHS Athletic Director Jeff Cruce over the winter and announced the formation of the new HOF committee slated to serve a two-year term.
New committee members are Dave Copeland, current Hall of Famers Ben Fleming Sr. and Butch Watson, Amy Jones, Craig Mims and Bill McCall Sr.
Cruce said one of his goals when he arrived at Berkeley three years ago was to start a Hall of Fame.
Having done that, Cruce felt it was time to put the committee and the Hall of Fame where it belonged, into the hands of Berkeley sports fans.
“The Berkeley Athletics Hall of Fame will be around long after I’m gone,” Cruce said. “One of my goals here was to get this off the ground. We’ve done that. Now the Hall of Fame should go to the community, the alumni, and fans of Stags athletics.”
Wofford announced that the Third Annual Berkeley Athletics Hall of Fame golf tournament has been tabbed for April 24 at the Berkeley Country Club.
“With the Hall of Fame awarding its first annual scholarship this spring, the golf tournament’s importance as our primary fundraiser increases. The tournament is the first chance to meet this year’s Hall of Fame inductees and get together for a good cause.”
