Finally. The weather broke, it warmed up and it stopped raining.
With Mother Nature cooperating, the Berkeley Stags boys tennis team got off to a good start to the 2014 spring season despite the adverse weather that stymied practice and match play to post a 2-1 record in the season’s first week.
The Stags opened the season with three matches, on the road at Fort Dorchester, hosting Stratford and traveling to Cane Bay.
Against the Patriots on Tuesday, March 11, the Stags jumped out to a hot start in singles’ play to cruise to a 5-1 win.
Singles winnners were Russell Brown, Samuel Giannelli, James Giannelli, and Matt Marsch, while the doubles team of Gray Livingston and Dallas Hamilton also notched a win.
On Wednesday, March 12, the Stags opened the home portion of the season hosting Stratford, falling 4-3 in a tight match.
“We were in it all the way,” Coach George Whittaker said.
Singles winners were Marsch and James Giannelli, while Livingtons and Hamilton rounded out the wins for the Stags.
On the road on Thursday, March 13 against Cane Bay, the Stags took out their frustration from the Knights’ loss on the Cobras with a 5-1 thumping.
Brown, Marsch, Samuel Giannelli, and James Giannelli won singles matches while the doubles team of Livingstone and Hamilton made it a perfect 3-0 sweep for the week with a win.
The Stags return home on Wednesday, March 26 with a match against Woodland High School.
