Veteran journalist Dan Brown of the Berkeley Independent captured seven South Carolina Press Association writing awards for 2013, as the SCPA’s annual awards banquet was held Saturday in Columbia.
Brown won four first place honors, including first place finishes in Humor Column Writing, Sports Feature Story, and Sports Column Writing. He also won a second place finish in Spot News Reporting, and two third-place finishes in Short Story and Spot Sports Story.
Summerville Communications Editor Frank Johnson won three awards for The Independent, including two first place honors in Sports Headline Writing and News Headline Writing, and a second place finish in Sports Page Design Portfolio.
The Independent and its sister newspapers, The Journal Scene in Summerville and The Gazette in Goose Creek, captured 26 awards in all for 2013.
