To celebrate the last week of American Heart Month, Molina Healthcare, a local company in North Charleston, hosted a free heart health event with kids from Family Connection of South Carolina on Thursday, February 27. Approximately 25 children learned how to make healthy snacks and stay heart healthy. As part of the company's charitable giving efforts, Molina Healthcare executives also presented a $5,000 check to the organization to support its programs that serve families in the local community. “Although Molina has been around for 30 years, Molina Healthcare is the new kid on the block in managed care in South Carolina,” said, Jackie Richards, executive director of Family Connection of South Carolina. “It is nice to know that they are committed to investing in our S.C. families who have children with special healthcare needs. We are very grateful for their support.”

According to the American Heart Association, in 2010 heart disease was the second leading cause of death in South Carolina. Although heart disease isn't common in children, the road to heart disease begins when people are young. Eating healthy and moderate exercise are some easy steps that anyone can take to help prevent heart disease.

“As a new health care company in the state, we are excited to support local community organizations like Family Connection of South Carolina and every opportunity we get, we want to be able to provide health education to the community,” said Thomas Lindquist, president of Molina Healthcare.
