In conjunction with the St. Stephen Catfish Festival, the Timberland Wolves baseballteam will try its hand at reeling in the big fish.
The First Annual St. Stephen Catfish Festival Catfish Tournament will wet a line this Saturday, March 22, at the CITGO gas station in St. Stephen.
The trailer tournament will include fishing hot spots such as the Santee River, the Cooper River, and Lakes Moultrie and Marion, and will give away a first place, five-fish total weight first prize of $300.
“We feel like the the catfish tournament is going to be a really big thing for us,” said Timberland Athletic Director and Baseball Coach Art Craig. “The Town of St. Stephen and the people of St. Stephen have always been there to support Timberland athletics and anytime we can get involved in a cause to benefit both the town and Timberland High School, it’s a good thing.”
Other prizes awarded include a big fish prize and grand prize drawings.
The entry fee is $20 per person and registration begins at the Hwy. 52 CITGO station in St. Stephen at 5 a.m. on Saturday.
All fishermen must be back at the CITGO station at exactly 2 p.m. for the weigh-in.
Craig emphasized that the weigh-in deadlin is not 2:05 p.m. or 2:10 p.m. but 2:00.
“You only have a first chance to do something right and we intend to do this tournament right,” Craig said. “The weigh-in deadline is 2 p.m.”
Total weight of the contestant’s five largest fish will be calculated.
All proceeds generated from the catfish tournament will benefit the Timberland Wolves baseball team.
Also, during the March 28-30 Catfish Festival, the THS baseball team will host a cornhole tournament as part of the weekend festivities.
“Johnny Broome thought it would be neat to have a cornhole tournament so we’ll have a booth and cornhole courts set up during the festival,” Craig said.
The cornhole tournament begins at noon on Saturday, March 29. Tournament details are available at the festival.
