The Timberland Lady Wolves softball team got off to an explosive start to the 2014 softball season, sweeping the Bishop Blast Preseason tournament and winning the Bracket IV tournament that ran the first week of March.
Pitcher Haley Welch was named MVP of the three-game affair which ran from Feb. 28 through March 2, while Danielle Hood and Sydney Jackson both were named to the all-tournament team.
“We played several lineups and it showed that they can all play multiple positions and we don’t lose a step,” said Lady Wolves Coach Ben Lailson. “Every girl had an important role in this weekend’s success. I am super proud of all of them.”
With the recent ice storm limiting field time for area baseball and softball teams, Lailson was impressed with his team’s performance.
“I am very pleased with where we are right now and look forward to having a great year watching these girls do what they do,” he said. “The girls played well in the tournament and are off to a good start this year. It was great to see the girls work through certain situations ... it showed their maturity from last year.”
Currently 0-2 on the season, the Lady Wolves kick off their Region 7AA schedule with a doubleheader on Friday against Kingstree.
