The nucleus of the Berkeley Stags that competed in the state championship swim meet in the fall continues to make waves during the winter.
The Berkeley Waveriders’ Sarah Mundy and Ashley Thornal competed in the U.S. Swimming state meet in Greenville Feb. 14-17.
Mundy qualified in nine events including the 50-, 100-, 200-, 500- and 1,650-yard freestyle races, the 100-yard individual medley, the 50-yard breaststroke and 50-yard butterfly. She placed in the top 10 in seven out of nine events and garnered two podium finishes with a third in the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 25.80 seconds and a third in the 1650-yard freestyle with a time of 19:10.07.
Mundy, just 12 years old and a seventh grader, also finished fifth in the 200-yard freestyle (2:06.30); seventh in the 100-yard freestlye (58.05); fifth in the 500-yard freestyle (5:36.15); eighth in the 50-yard butterfly (29.42) and seventh in the 100-yard IM (1:06.86).
Thornal, who qualified in four events, the 50-and-100-yard freestyle, and the 100-and-200-yard backstroke, finished in the top 20 in the 50-yard freestyle. She placed 12th overall with a time of 24.96 seconds.
Thornal qualified for the Senior Sectional Championship in the 15-and-older age group in Charlotte, but the time conflicts with the YMCA Waveriders’ upcoming regional meet in Rock Hill that same weekend, Mar. 13-16.
Mundy qualified for the U.S. Swimming Age Group Sectionals March 20-23 in Atlanta at Georgia Tech in 14-and-under.
