The Berkeley wrestling team has turned in one of its best seasons ever under first-year cooach Shane Judy.
The Stags qualified five wrestlers for the Class AAA state championship meet at the Lower State, including a Lower State champion, a Lower State runner-up and a pair of Region 8AAA champs in the Lower State tournament at St. James High School.
The Stags represented Berkeley and Moncks Corner well by placing fifth over all as a team out of 15 teams at the AAA Lower State meet.
Qualifiers included Daniel Driggers at 182 pounds, Bryan Jackson at 120 pounds and Charlie Anderson at 113 pounds.
King finished fourth in the state while Jackson, Anderson, Driggers and Gadsden finished fifth.
“Five wrestlers finishing in the top five in the state is a good sign for our wrestling program,” Judy said. “It’s the same thing I’ve said all season. I thought I had the strongest individual wrestlers that Berkeley had in a while.”
Judy said these state tournament wrestlers are leaving the future in good hand.
“I’ve got several young wrestlers up and coming. I don’t want a championship team, I want a championship program.”
Gadsden, who won the Lower State championship, lost his first round match in the state tournament.
“Dominick is the quiet kid,” Judy said. “He’s the one you don’t see coming. He’s a ball of fire. He has a don’t quit attitude. He doesn’t stop until the whistle blows.”
King lost his semifinal match and finished fourth in the state competition.
“Alex is a very dynamic wrestler. He’s very sure of himself on the mat,” the coach said. “Alex has been a good wrestler for me ... he is a self assured wrestler.”
