Berkeley High School Athletic Director Jeff Cruce has announced the application process for a pair of $2,500 scholarships to a deserving BHS senior boy and girl this spring has now opened.
“One of the benefits of having a Hall of Fame like we do here at Berkeley High School is that we’re afforded the opportunity to take some of leftover operating funds each year and award the money to a pair of deserving Berkeley Stags student athletes in the form of a scholarship,” Cruce said.
Cruce said students can start filing applications now for each scholarship.
“Your guidance counselors will have the application forms,” he said. “Qualifications for the scholarship award include being a senior letter winner and a minimum 2.5 grade point average.”
Cruce said the senior student-athlete must have participated and completed two varsity sports in their senior year.
“We are celebrating the commitment of the multi-sport athlete,” Cruce said. “Given the year-round nature of high school sports these days, the commitment of a student-athlete that invests the blood, sweat and tears to compete in more than one varsity sport in a year isn’t seen often anymore. We feel it is important here at Berkeley High School to reward such a commitment.”
The $2,500 scholarship will be awarded at the 2013 Senior Night awards banquet.
The scholarship award will be made payable to the school the student-athlete is attending.
The number of letters won will be calculated with the student’s GPA and class ranking to determine the award winners.
Cruce did say that any student-athlete receiving NCAA scholarship assistance will not be eligible for this scholarship award.
“These are NCAA guidelines and not Berkeley High School’s,” Cruce said. “This scholarship is designed for the high school student athlete that does not plan to play competitive sports on the collegiate level.”
