Thousands of Berkeley County residents remained without power Thursday morning, the second full day of Winter Storm Pax in the Lowcountry.
In Berkeley County there were still 23,617 BEC members without power Thursday morning. SCE&G reported 1,871 customers were without power in Berkeley County Thursday morning.
There were 16,251 SCE&G customers in Dorchester County without power Thursday morning, according to SCE&G’s website. On Wednesday there were more than 28,000 Dorchester County SCE&G customers without power.
On Thursday morning 2,290 Berkeley Electric Cooperative members were without power in Dorchester County, according to their website.
More than 1,200 SCE&G field personnel and about 300 off-system crew members were mobilized Wednesday and are working safely and efficiently to restore power to those in need as Winter Storm Pax continues impacting SCE&G’s service territory, according to a press release.
As of 6 p.m. Wednesday, there were less than 85,000 outages across SCE&G’s service territory with a concentration in the Aiken and Lowcountry areas. Crews have been mobilized to help with restoration efforts in these areas and are working throughout the evening as conditions allow, according to SCE&G.
Residents need to stay away from downed power lines. Ice can cause tree limbs and entire trees to break and fall, sometimes taking power lines and even meter boxes down with them. Always assume any downed power line you see is live and stay away.
Residents need to use extreme caution with supplemental heaters and generators. It can be tempting to supplement a heating system lost during an outage, but household items such as cooking stoves or ovens and outdoor grills should never be used for heat.
If you use a fireplace for heat, be sure to extinguish any flames before going to bed. Generators can help during emergencies, but require care and planning for safe use.
