Lady Cobras slithering toward playoffs

  • Thursday, February 6, 2014

Ira Owens’ message to his team all winter has been to play hard from opening tip to final whistle.

“They’re starting to see the rewards for all of their hard work,” said the Cane Bay girls basketball coach, whose team defeated West Ashley 44-41 on Friday in a Region 7-AAAA game. “... We’ve got girls that will scrap and get on the floor after loose balls. That’s been a big difference. We’ve gotten a lot of those 50-50 balls. They’re starting to see that and it’s gotten infectious.”

Against West Ashley, the Lady Cobras got 18 points and six rebounds from sophomore center Shameque Robinson. Freshman forward Regina King added 10 points and 10 rebounds. Senior guard Makalya Dudley chipped in eight points.

“That was a big win for us,” Owens said.

The Lady Cobras (7-11, 3-2 region) outscored West Ashley 13-8 in the last period to pull out the victory.

They were to play at Wando (after press time) on Tuesday before hosting Goose Creek on Feb. 11 and traveling to Stratford on Feb. 14.

On the season, Dudley leads the team in scoring at 13.2 points per game, followed by Robinson (8.0 PPG). Dudley also leads in assists and steals per game (2.8 APG, 3.9 SPG).

Senior Lindsay Manning leads in rebounding (8.2 RPG). Robinson (6.7 RPG) and senior Brett Pitcher (5.5 RPG) are second and third in rebounding.

“If we get everybody together on the same night, we’re going to be a team that gives people fits,” Owens said. “… It looks like something has clicked.”
