Tim Baldwin wouldn’t have been shocked if his team was out of rhythm early. The snow days last week wreaked havoc with the practice schedule.

But the Goose Creek Lady Gators didn’t encounter any speed bumps early against rival Stratford. Baldwin’s team jumped out to a 20-4 lead after a quarter and coasted to a 65-22 victory against the Lady Knights on Friday at SHS.

“I was really pleased with the first group, considering how long we’d been off,” said Baldwin, whose team improved to 19-2 overall and 5-0 in Region 7-AAAA. “We practiced Monday for an hour and hadn’t practiced since. I thought we shot the ball well, created for the big girls underneath and for the most part did what we needed to do to separate early.”

The Lady Gators led 32-6 at halftime and Baldwin freely substituted the rest of the way. Senior center Semoine Frasier led a balanced scoring effort with 12 points, while freshman forward Ericka Broughton and junior Dakasha Richards chipped in 10 points apiece. Senior guard Alex Ludwig and sophomore Zeleria Simpson added eight points each.

Frasier added seven rebounds, three assists and three steals.

“We’re still about seven deep and I’m looking for two more girls that can go,” Baldwin said. “We’re trying to get ready for the playoffs.”

Stratford, still winless against region foes, was led by Skye Moore with seven points. Madison Ackerman added six points.

The Lady Gators were slated to take on West Ashley on Tuesday. A win in that game (after press time) would give Goose Creek the Region 7-AAAA title.

Stratford travels to West Ashley on Friday.
