Stags on edge as region play winds down

  • Wednesday, February 5, 2014

Dan Brown/Independent Alex Taylor and Malik Meggett have stepped to the front of the Berkeley offense through the first half of the Region 8AAA schedule.

The Region 8AAA schedule is coming to a close with the playoffs set to begin in little more than a week and the Berkeley Stags are on the edge.

With a 9-9 record overall and a 2-3 record in games through Jan. 31, the Stags stand on the edge of the state playoffs in fourth place with a 2-3 record. Orangeburg-Wilkinson, Hanahan and James Island are all tied for the top spot with identical 4-1 records.

While not out of the seeding race completely, Berkeley could do some damage in the regular seasonís final two weeks with games against Hanahan, Orangeburg-Wilkinson and James Island on tap for this week.

Itís a simple formula ó win and youíre in.

On Jan. 31, the Stags edged Hilton Head 35-33 in a defensive battle. The Stags failed to register a player in double figures but Molik Meggett and DíAndre Richardson each tallied eight points each for the Stags and Alex Taylor added six points.

In Berkeleyís 65-59 loss to the Hawks on Jan. 17, Malik Meggett led the Stags with 19 points, following by DíAndre Richardsonís 14 points and Demery Fordís 10 points.

In the Stagsí 55-41 loss to James Island, Meggett once again led BHS in scoring with 17 points, followed by big man Alex Taylorís 10 points.

In the game against Orangebur-Wilkinson it was Taylor who threw down the big game inside with 17 points. Meggett chipped in 13 points and Richardson added nine points to lead BHS.

Should the Stags finish as the Region 8AAA fourth seed, they will open the playoffs on the road on Feb. 18, against the number one seed in Region 7AAA.
