The U.S. Forest Service needs volunteers from across the state to fill vacancies on the Francis Marion and Sumter National Forests’ Resource Advisory Committee (FMS RAC).

The FMS RAC oversees spending of Title II funds under the Secure Rural Schools Act in Berkeley, Newberry or Union counties.

The FMS RAC works closely with the U.S. Forest Service and county officials to recommend projects that will benefit forest health, fish, wildlife, soils, watersheds and other resources; maintain roads, trails and other infrastructure; or control noxious weeds.

“I cannot emphasize enough the important work that the FMS RAC does for the local communities that surround our national forests,” said Rick Lint, forest supervisor for the Francis Marion and Sumter National Forests.

“The time commitment for each RAC member is small, but the impacts can be great and extremely rewarding.”

Nominees are needed for the following categories:

• Organized labor or non-timber forest products harvester;

• Replacement (can be outdoor recreation, energy and mineral development, fishing group, commercial timber industry, non-timber forest products harvester);
