Stags go 2-1 in region mega-match

  • Wednesday, January 29, 2014

Dan Brown/Independent Senior Alex King helped lead the Stags to a 2-1 tally in the region mega-match against O-W, Stall and Hilton Head.

On a night when the Berkeley wrestling team honored its departing 2014 seniors the Stags also got a decent look at where they line up in Region 8AAA competition: right in the thick of things.

Squaring off against region opponents Stall, Orangeburg-Wilkinson and Hilton Head, the Stags came out 2-1, beating the Warriors and Bruins but falling to the Sea Hawks.

“This match gave us a good indication as to where we line up in the region,” said Coach Shane Judy. “This was the bulk of our region competition here tonight.”

Earlier in the week Berkeley lost to Hanahan on the road and faced James Island on Jan. 29 in its last match of the regular season. The Class AAA wrestling duals state tournament first round begins Feb. 8.

Before Thursday night’s match the Stags took a moment to honor seniors Tyler Mills, Yancy Wright, Travis Jackson, Alex King, Devin Butler and Daniel Driggers.

“These young men have brought a tremendous amount of leadership to the Stags wrestling program, not just this year but in previous years as well,” Judy said. “Their presence and leadership here will be missed.”

The biggest match of the night came against Hilton Head in the 138-pound class when Caleb Byrd pinned the Sea Hawks’ Christopher Soler with just four seconds remaining in the third period.

Byrd overcame an 8-2 deficit in the third period to tie the match 8-8 late. At the time of the pin the 138-pound grappler held a narrow 10-8 lead.

Byrd won his other two matches of the night by forfeit.

In addition to Byrd, Bryan Jackson, Dominic Gadsden, Alex King and Devin Butler picked up three wins.

Other wins for the Stags included Justin Wright, Hunter Carr, Daniel Driggers, Justin Bellamy and Travis Jackson, all winning by pins against Stall, and Tyler Mills took a major decision over Orangeburg.
